Memory Jar {Gift Ideas}

Buying gifts for my mom is notoriously difficult, even though it should not be.  We have the same taste.  We talk all the time and I know specific items she wants.  However, she has a bad, bad habit of buying the things that she suggests for herself before we have a chance to give them as a gift.  This year, it was a Pottery Barn roulette wheel that she wanted for her living room.  When I heard she bought it, I purchased her a URL instead (nothing says “Happy 60th” like your own place on the interwebz, right?).

My sister was a bit craftier (and more sentimental) with her gift.  She asked all of our immediate and extended family members for memories of my mom.  Some were funny, others were sentimental…and they were all packaged in little envelopes within a large mason jar.

I had added a few of my special memories of mom:

1. The time she went out to 7-Eleven on an errand with a loaf of bread instead of her purse (obviously she had to come home to get $$.)

2. The first time she met my husband, she answered the phone by picking up the TV remote saying, “Hello?  Hello?” instead of grabbing the phone.

or our family favorite,

3. The time she got a bra stuck on her purse walking through the aisles of a department store and wondered why everyone was staring at her as she walked through the rest of the mall.

These are the moments that make my mom lovable and that make her “fun” – and now, thanks to my sister, she has (nearly) 60 reminders of the memories our family members have of her – with hopes of many, many more to add to the jar in the coming years.

Happy birthday, Mom!  We love you!
